How to Track a Flight, Ship, or Vehicle

A method for following aircraft, ships, and ground transport in near-real time using public tracking feeds — adding a physical dimension that social media alone can't provide.

Aircraft and ships broadcast their position on public transponder networks, and much ground transport is trackable too. This transport-tracking method adds a hard, physical layer to an investigation — confirming movements, corroborating claims, and reconstructing events — a practical slice of geospatial intelligence.

What you'll need

  • An identifier: a flight number, aircraft registration, ship name or IMO number, or a route
  • Flight, vessel, and traffic trackers from the Flights & Traffic category
  • Mapping tools from the OSINT Maps category for context

Steps

  1. Identify the craft. Convert what you have into a stable identifier — an aircraft's registration or a ship's IMO number stays constant even when flight numbers or names change.
  2. Find it on a live tracker. Use flight and vessel trackers to locate the craft's current position, heading, speed, and altitude or draft in near-real time.
  3. Pull the history. Review recent tracks to establish patterns — routine routes, unusual diversions, or a gap where the transponder went dark, which can itself be significant.
  4. Cross-reference the operator. Registration and ownership databases reveal who operates the craft, connecting a movement to a company or individual.
  5. Corroborate with other sources. Match the track against photos, social posts, port or airport records, and satellite imagery to confirm the craft was where the data says.
  6. Place it in context. Plot the movement on a map alongside the rest of your investigation, so the physical track reinforces or challenges the wider picture.

Common pitfalls

  • Assuming coverage is complete. Transponders can be off, and some regions have sparse receiver coverage — a gap is not proof of anything by itself.
  • Confusing similar craft. Verify by the constant identifier (registration/IMO), not a reused flight number or common name.
  • Over-reading a single track. Corroborate unusual movements before drawing conclusions.

Verify your result

You have tracked the craft when you can present its identity, its position and recent history, its operator, and independent corroboration that it was where the data indicates. Screenshot the tracks with timestamps so the movement can be independently checked.
