Verification

The disciplined process of confirming that information is genuine before relying on it.

Verification is what separates intelligence from rumour. It means confirming a claim through independent corroboration, assigning a confidence level rather than asserting certainty, and actively seeking evidence that would prove a finding wrong. For media, it follows a fixed discipline: establish provenance, time, place, and source before trusting anything.

As synthetic media proliferates, verification has become the single most valuable OSINT skill — the ability to tell what is real.
