Geolocation is the skill of establishing precisely where a photo or video was captured, often from a single frame with no location metadata. It has verified atrocities, debunked propaganda, and reconstructed events minute by minute. This guide walks through a repeatable method you can practise on any image.

Steps
- Extract every clue from the image. Before touching a map, list what you can see: signage and the language on it, licence-plate formats, business names, architectural style, road markings, vegetation, terrain, and the position of the sun. Each clue narrows the possibilities.
- Establish the region. Language, licence plates, and business names usually narrow you to a country or region quickly. Search any readable text — a shop name or phone number can place you in a specific city.
- Find anchor features. Look for something distinctive and fixed: a particular tower, bridge, mountain profile, stadium, or unusual building. These are what you will match against imagery.
- Match against satellite and street imagery. Use your mapping tool to search the candidate area and compare the anchor features against satellite and street-level views. Work outward from the most distinctive feature until the layout of streets, buildings, and landmarks lines up.
- Confirm with a second feature. Never conclude on one match. Verify that a second independent feature — the angle between two buildings, the shape of a car park, the course of a river — also agrees.
- Optionally establish the time. The direction and length of shadows, compared against a sun-position tool for your candidate location and date, can confirm both where and when the photo was taken (see chronolocation).
Common pitfalls
- Concluding on a single weak match. Coincidental resemblance is common; always corroborate with a second feature.
- Trusting mirrored or edited images. A flipped image reverses signage and layout — check text is readable the right way round.
- Ignoring the season. Vegetation and snow change; satellite imagery may be from a different time of year than the photo.
Verify your result
You have geolocated an image when at least two independent, fixed features match the same spot on the map and nothing in the image contradicts that location. Record the coordinates and screenshot the matching imagery so your finding is reproducible.
