How to Chronolocate a Photo or Video

A method for establishing when a photo or video was captured — not just where — using shadows, weather, celestial position, and on-scene clues to pin down the date and time.

Geolocation answers where; chronolocation answers when. Establishing the time and date a media file was captured — independent of any timestamp, which can be wrong or faked — is what turns a photo into evidence of a specific event. This method reads the sky, the shadows, and the scene to fix the moment.

What you'll need

  • The media at the highest resolution available, already geolocated if possible
  • Mapping and sun-position tools from the OSINT Maps category
  • Image and video tools from the Photos & Videos category

Steps

  1. Geolocate first. Chronolocation depends on knowing where the image was taken — shadow and sun math only work with a fixed location. If you haven't already, geolocate the photo before going further.
  2. Measure the shadows. The length and direction of shadows, combined with the location, give you the sun's angle — and a sun-position calculator turns that into a time-of-day and a range of possible dates.
  3. Read the weather and season. Snow, foliage, flooding, or haze narrow the date. Cross-reference against historical weather records for the location to confirm or exclude candidate days.
  4. Use scene clues. Event banners, construction stages, posters, licence plates, vehicle models, and shopfronts all carry dates. A "since when did this exist?" question often brackets the time tightly.
  5. Corroborate with other posts. Find other media from the same place and event — satellite imagery, live streams, other users' uploads — and align them to build a timeline.
  6. State a range, not a false certainty. Report the tightest window the evidence supports (for example "late morning, mid-March") and note which clue set each bound.

Common pitfalls

  • Trusting the file timestamp. Cameras have wrong clocks and metadata is trivial to alter; treat it as a claim to test, not a fact.
  • Forgetting daylight saving and time zones. Sun math gives local solar time; convert carefully before comparing to other sources.
  • Over-precision. Don't claim a minute when the shadows only support an hour — corroborate before you narrow.

Verify your result

You have chronolocated the media when you can give a defended time-and-date range, each bound tied to a concrete clue — shadow angle, weather record, or a dated object in frame — and consistent with independent sources.
