Pretexting

Using a fabricated scenario to manipulate someone into revealing information.

Pretexting is a social-engineering technique in which an attacker invents a false scenario or identity to trick a target into divulging information or performing an action. It crosses the line from open-source collection into active deception.

Ethical OSINT does not use pretexting: legitimate practitioners collect only genuinely public information and never deceive people to extract it. Understanding pretexting matters mainly for defence — recognising and resisting it.
