Provenance is the chain of origin for a piece of media or information: where it first appeared, who created it, and how it has been shared and altered since. Establishing provenance — typically by reverse-searching an image to find its earliest appearance — is the first step in verification.
If a dramatic "breaking" image turns out to have been online for years, its provenance collapses the story immediately.
