Digital Footprint

online footprint

The total trail of data a person or organisation leaves across the internet.

A digital footprint is everything discoverable about a subject online — accounts, posts, photos, registrations, public records, and leaked data. Mapping a footprint is the goal of much OSINT; reducing your own is the goal of privacy self-defence.

Footprints grow through reused identifiers, published metadata, and cross-links between personas. Understanding how they accumulate is the key both to investigating others and to protecting yourself.
