A sock puppet is a fictitious online persona an investigator uses to conduct research without revealing their real identity or intentions. A good sock puppet is aged, consistent, and compartmentalised — it shares nothing (email, phone, photo) that could tie it back to the analyst.
Sock puppets protect both the investigation and the investigator, but they must be used within platform terms and ethical limits; they are for observation, not deception of the people being investigated.
