How to Create a Research Sock Puppet Account

A method for building and maintaining a believable, well-separated investigative persona so you can research online without exposing your real identity or contaminating your findings.

A sock puppet is a research persona kept strictly separate from your real identity. Used well, it lets you view profiles, join groups, and observe communities without tipping off a target or linking the investigation back to you. Used carelessly, it collapses — leaking your real name, IP, or browsing habits. This method builds one that holds up.

What you'll need

  • A clean browser profile or virtual machine, ideally the environment from the set up a research environment method
  • Privacy and identity tools from the Privacy & Security category
  • The target platforms from the Social Media category
  • A plausible, consistent backstory written down before you start

Steps

  1. Separate the persona from you completely. Never create or use the account on your personal device, browser, or network. Work from a dedicated browser profile or VM with its own IP, so nothing about your real digital footprint bleeds into the persona.
  2. Build a consistent identity. Choose a name, age, location, and interests that fit the community you'll observe, and record them so you never contradict yourself. A profile photo should not be a real person's — reverse-image-searchable faces get puppets burned.
  3. Age the account before you use it. Brand-new accounts are suspicious and rate-limited. Let it sit, follow neutral interests, and post a little ordinary content so it looks lived-in before it goes near a target.
  4. Practise strict OPSEC. Keep the persona's email, phone, and logins isolated from your real ones. Never log in from your real network, never cross-follow your own accounts, and don't reuse a username you've used elsewhere.
  5. Observe, don't engage. The goal is to watch. Interacting with a target — messaging, friending, commenting — creates risk and can cross ethical or legal lines. Read the platform's terms and your own rules of engagement first.
  6. Retire a burned persona. If a puppet is challenged, linked to you, or locked, stop using it. Don't try to rescue it in ways that expose more; spin up a fresh, clean one instead.

Common pitfalls

  • Reusing anything real. A recycled photo, username, phone number, or recovery email is the single most common way puppets are unmasked.
  • Logging in from the wrong place. One login from your home IP or personal phone can tie the whole persona to you.
  • Engaging when you meant to observe. Active contact escalates risk and can turn passive research into something you can't defend.

Verify your result

Your persona is sound when nothing about it points back to you: a separate device or VM and IP, a face and username that don't reverse-search to a real person, isolated credentials, and a backstory you can repeat without slipping. If any of those fail, treat the puppet as compromised.
