Metadata is information attached to a file or record that describes it: when a document was created and by whom, or where and with what device a photo was taken. It is often invisible in normal viewing yet rich with investigative value.
People routinely hand away intelligence through metadata they never intended to share. Analysts extract it deliberately; the privacy-conscious strip it before publishing.
