Footprinting

reconnaissancerecon

Systematically mapping the online presence and infrastructure of a target.

Footprinting is the reconnaissance phase of an investigation — methodically enumerating a target's domains, subdomains, email addresses, employees, and exposed systems to build a complete picture of its online presence. For an organisation, that means mapping its infrastructure; for a person, their accounts and identifiers.

It is the OSINT foundation of both due diligence and security assessment, and it draws on domain, DNS, and username techniques.
